Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) is a naturally occurring coenzyme that is involved in electron transport in the mitochondria and acts as a cofactor in the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Q10 is also claimed to act as an antioxidant and membrane stabilizer. Tissues with high energy requirements such as heart, liver, kidneys and skeletal muscles have the highest levels of Q10.

Documentation of effect

Preparations containing Q10 are sold in Norway as a food (natural remedy) and have been used in many different indications. Most studies with Q10 have been performed in patients with cardiovascular disease, including heart failure, hypertension, angina pectoris and myocardial ischemia. Other areas where Q10 has been tested are immune disorders, metabolic disorders and Parkinson's disease. Q10 is also used as a general energy supplement. It has been observed that patients with heart disease, especially heart failure, have lower endogenous levels of Q10 in serum and in the myocardium compared to healthy individuals. It has also been shown that administration of Q10 increases the concentration in the serum and in the myocardium.
